Benefits of multidisciplinary assessment on contemporary respiratory medicine.
Professor Joan Soriano discusses the benefits of multidisciplinary assessment in uncovering otherwise undiagnosed cases of COPD.
New treatments and research were highlighted at ERS London, including triple therapy in COPD, specific treatment in asthmatic patients with high eosinophil counts, and tobacco use. One study identified cardiovascular patients in cardiovascular centers with undiagnosed COPD that was found by spirometry. This is a message for cardiologists, who don’t normally investigate respiratory diseases, to look for COPD. A multidisciplinary approach is an issue that is very important in respiratory medicine, and should include a GP, chest physician, nurse, technicians and even other professionals such as statisticians.
